The Taitung Spirit Festival in Taiwan A New Site of Therapeutic Travel in Asia

From events in the mountains and on the coast to putting down roots in the city, we’re initiating a slow-living form of tourism in Taitung

City of slow living embraced by mountains and the sea births a therapeutic brand

In southeastern Taiwan, bordered by the Pacific, Taitung is celebrated for its magnificent scenery of mountains and the sea, multiethnic culture, and slow pace of life. In recent years, Taitung, hailed as a city of slow living, has attracted tourists and become a therapeutic destination for those in pursuit of balance between the body and mind, sustainable living, and in-depth experiences.

Since 2021, the Taitung Spirit Festival has nomadically brought such activities as classes for the body, mind, and spirit and music-therapy experiences to the mountainous and coastal natural environments of Luye, Dulan, Jinzun, Fushan, and Taromak. A total of over 260 activities have brought together over 400 instructors and 300 organizations, attracting more than 50,000 participants. As the event has expanded, beginning in 2023, cooperation with the locality has increased, establishing a platform for industrial matching and bringing in instructors from abroad. The event has widened to include support for social workers, care for the elderly, and experiences related to the culture of new immigrants, allowing therapeutic experiences to shift from the individual to practices that are cross-cultural and connected to communities. In addition, the festival has grown from including just activities to a therapeutic platform of classes, in-depth tours, and local industry collaboration, gradually giving form to Taitung’s “map of healing.”

2026 Theme: Taitung, Bloom in Your Healing Power—diverse programs for experiencing daily life in communities and the city

For this year’s festival theme of “Taitung, Bloom in Your Healing Power,” people are invited to rediscover their inner tempo and balance in life by reconnecting with nature, others, and themselves. This is the first time the festival has revolved around the idea that “the city is healing” by bringing therapeutic activities from the mountains and coastal areas into daily city life, thus developing Taiwan’s first permanent healing hub. Healing is no longer something that requires arranging a special trip; instead, it is being integrated into the tempo of everyday life.

This June to October, there are to be 121 classes at the Taitung Healing Hub with 23 local instructors leading themed workshops covering such areas as bodily exploration, art therapy, sensory healing, mind-spirit healing, and family DIY activities. Two major events are the Summer Healing Festival at the Taitung Forest Park on July 25 and 26, which was a hit that attracted locals and tourists alike, and the Celebrity Healing Salon, which will take place at the National Museum of Prehistory on August 15 and 16. Moreover, this year is seeing the debut of the Healing Nook, from June to September, for which 15 local businesses are putting on 120 healing experiences at places of dining, accommodations, and other venues, turning the concept of “the city is healing” into a reality of daily life. Furthermore, Pure Heart Slow Travel, held from June to November, is going on in collaboration with local lodging providers, community organizations, Indigenous communities, and revitalization groups to bring people into Indigenous communities and destinations along the coast and in the East Rift Valley. One of the collaborators, the Luanshan Forest Culture Museum, obtained ISO 20121 sustainability certification in 2025 as an example of how Taitung is keeping pace with global trends in body-mind-spirit healing and sustainability.

From benefiting the individual to the whole community

The Taitung Spirit Festival is not just about care for the body and mind but views healing as a practical response to society’s needs. This year, the event will continue to help frontline workers and the elderly by giving social workers and social welfare beneficiaries participation support and by holding exclusive classes to give them opportunities for rest and self-care within their busy schedules. In addition, by integrating local medical care and aromatherapy resources, there are also healing activities for the elderly. Thus, the power of healing is being brought to people of varying generations and social groups. This synthesis that involves individual care, social concern, and local revitalization makes the festival one of Taiwan’s very few therapeutic brands that links physical and mental health, social welfare, and industrial development.

From Taitung to the world, a vision for Taitung’s “map of healing”

With the trend of health and healing trips growing around the world, an increasing number of people are starting to look for destinations that promote balance between the body and mind, cultural experiences, and sustainable living. The festival concept that “the city is healing” differs in a new way from conventional vacation-based healing trips in that it is not just about activities and classes but serves as an interaction between the natural environment, culture, and social groups to jointly create a therapeutic lifestyle.

The festival is part of Taitung’s continued effort at connecting local resources and engaging in international exchange, gradually forming a therapeutic lifestyle in the city. From a focus on the mountains and coast to being rooted in the city, and from travel experiences to daily practice, Taitung is developing a new look for therapeutic travel in Asia in a way that is gentler and more in tune with everyday life. People from all over the world are invited to come and rediscover the possibilities for the idea that “life itself is healing.”
