The New Landmark of Kowloon East: Royal Garden Expands in Tseung Kwan O
The New Landmark of Kowloon East Where City Lights Meet Resort Nights: Family and pet-friendly ‘oasis of calm’ unveiled with Royal Garden Kowloon East opened in January 2026
Hong Kong’s iconic Royal Garden hotel brand is expanding for the first time in 44 years with the opening of The Royal Garden Kowloon East in Tseung Kwan O in January 2026.
The 366-room urban resort is a restyled transformation of the former Crowne Plaza Kowloon East. As the developer who first created The Royal Garden in Tsim Sha Tsui back in 1981, Sun Hung Kai Properties have reimagined a new era for the property as an “oasis of calm” – inheriting the Royal Garden’s signature quiet elegance.
The Royal Garden Kowloon East is now “redefined for a new generation of discerning travellers”, says Area General Manager Jenny Chan. Nature-inspired design, family-friendly innovation, pet-friendly hospitality and a vibrant mix of dining and lifestyle experiences define a “bold evolution of the brand”, she says. “This new destination promises to be a vibrant and distinctive addition to Hong Kong’s hospitality landscape.”
Novel aspects of this serene escape from the city’s hectic pace include seven exclusive villas with private gardens tailored for families, couples and nature enthusiasts which are also pet-friendly, catering for staycations that include four-legged companions. Designed with a Balinese aesthetic, they feature warm oak finishes and soothing colours.
The new guest rooms are styled as warm, welcoming homes catering for a variety of needs – from family-friendly rooms with interconnected setups and drawing walls, to bunk bed studios or deluxe suites with multiple rooms for groups of friends.
Along with a vibrant mix of parent-child recreational options, there are two themed family rooms to create unforgettable vacation experiences including the Junk Bay Kids’ Den, with a cosy ocean adventure theme and dedicated play area, and a Family Fortress Room with an interactive castle exploration theme.
For gatherings of friends and family, Garden Lounge is a tropical sanctuary awash in olive tones and golden accents, evoking the atmosphere of a forest, complete with outdoor barbecue garden and a play area for youngsters.
On the ground floor in the lobby, the renowned Fine Foods Lounge serve quality snacks and pastries including Royal Garden’s artisanal cakes, iconic butterfly cookies, and exceptional coffee — an ideal spot to savor life’s refined pleasures.
Dining will be elevated with the launch of Ponentino which is inspired by The Royal Garden’s original and award-winning Sabatini Ristorante Italiano. It offers the younger generation a place for a casual and stylish Italian all-day dining experience. Scheduled to open in July 2026, this rooftop Italian venue will transport guests to the Italian countryside with its curated menu of regional flavours. Located on the highest floor of the hotel, Ponentino will extend onto a spacious outdoor terrace, offering breathtaking views of Tseung Kwan O’s natural beauty, particularly at sunset.
The hotel’s wellness and leisure offerings include a 25-meter outdoor pool, a state-of-the-art fitness centre, along with a Kids Club: Giggle Hill and communal spaces for relaxation and connection.
The hotel’s contemporary MICE and wedding venues are headlined by the Diamond Room 8, seating up to 180 guests in a minimal tropical atmosphere with expansive French windows, its adjacent outdoor garden provides additional outdoor space, catering to various event needs. There is a bridal room which is fully equipped for the special day with a private bathroom and changing room, dressing area and makeup station.
The eco-conscious design by LAAB Architects is designed to be aligned with the preferences of Millennials, Gen Z and Gen Alpha”. Inspired by the natural landscape of Tseung Kwan O, a palette of olive and apricot tones, warm wood finishes and airy layouts create a seamless transition between indoor elegance and outdoor serenity.
“It’s a true urban resort, an elegant, relaxed haven of tranquillity, wellness and curated experiences from the bustle of Hong Kong,” says Otto Ng, Design Director from LAAB.
“This contemporary urban resort offers a redefined hospitality experience that caters to the evolving needs of modern travellers while retaining the essence of The Royal Garden legacy,” adds General Manager Johnny Cheung.
“The Royal Garden Kowloon East represents an exciting milestone for Sun Hung Kai Properties and will be an exciting new addition to Hong Kong’s hospitality scene.”
The Royal Garden Kowloon East is being unveiled in three phases over 2026 – with guest rooms and suites launched in January; exclusive villas and family-focused amenities opening by March; and the final phase concluding in July with the grand opening of Ponentino.
